HMS Vanguard was launched at Deptford in 1787. She belonged to the Arrogant Class type of 74 gun ships of the line. She was the flagship of Admiral Nelson at the Battle of the Nile on 1 August 1798, when he defeated the French fleet of the Mediterranean.
