In 1796 the Royal Navy placed orders for four new sloops-of-war, the Snake class ships. Since the qualities of ship-rigged and brig-rigged vessels were to be compared, a ship of each design was ordered. In the end a design for 18 gun flush deck brigs with a three-masted ship rig won out.
HMS Snake was launched in 1797. Her eventful career is shown in a Wikipedia article, the most important being the capture or destroying of two French privateers and one Danish privateer. She also captured numerous small merchantmen. She spent much time escorting convoys to and from the West Indies, until she was finally sold in 1816.
The model was designed to original plans of the British Admiralty. The ship model was built without sails to allow for a better view on the impressive rigging. The underwater hull is covered with copper plates, their edges being partly painted green-white to simulate weathering and copper patina.
There are more pictures, several views of the entire ship model taken from all directions, and several closer views of hull, deck and rigging. Click images to enlarge!
