The French bomb ketch La Salamandre

The bomb ketches were difficult to sail. They did not have a fore-mast, but instead two large mortars on the foredeck. They had to have a massive and firm hull, in order to withstand the recoil of the cannons with their heavy projectiles.

The bomb ketches were used by the French navy in the 17th and 18th century to bombard port towns on the Barbary coast. The La Salamandre was launched in 1752 in Toulon.

The La Salamandre model, photos, description and dimensions

The model was built by a very experienced model maker, M. Eric L'Emaillet, living in Quimper, France. He built several exquisite ship models, like the Le Boulongne that is on display at the Musée de la Marine in Port-Louis. In 1996 he won a gold medal for Le Boulongne at the French championship of naval modeling, and two gold medals for his model of La Renommée at the world championships in Switzerland in 1997 and in Belgium in 2000.

The plans were taken from the publication by Jean Boudriot & Hubert Berti, Bomb Ketch LA SALAMANDRE 1752, Monograph with thirty-four plates at 1:48 scale, Editions A.N.C.R.E.

There are more pictures, several views of the entire model taken from all directions, and pictures of details of the model. Click images to enlarge!

This model is a very beautiful, very fine piece of work, a true masterpiece. The model was built partly without planking on port side, to show the interior fittings. The wood used is pear, natural or stained black for certain parts, and boxwood, for the decorations and sculptures, chosen for its yellow color and the great finesse of its grain. The metal parts are made of blackened brass.
There are many photos of the building process on the website of the model builder.

The ship model is 1 : 48 scale. Length is 95 cm, width 50 cm, height 90 cm.
