N. C. Kierkegaard
(1817 - 1869) was born in Denmark, but lived most of his life in
Sweden. He was a shipbuilder at Gamla Varvet in Gothenburg and wrote
"Practical shipbuilding art" which, among other things, contained 44
drawings by him on various types of ships. The original Swedish title of
the work is "Praktisk skeppsbyggnadskonst: ett urval af aderton stycken
skeppsbyggnadsritningar, med tilhörande tackelritningar,
dimensionsförteckningar, beskriftningar m.m"
His drawings are available online by the National Maritime Museums in Sweden.
One plan set of five plans (plan-1, plan-2, plan-3, plan-4, plan-5) of 1862 shows a three-masted barque of 180 Swedish lasts ≈ 430 tons capacity and 37 m waterline length.
The model was built to the plans by a very experienced model maker, with great care of details. There are more pictures, several views of the entire ship model taken from all directions, and several closer views of hull, deck and rigging. Click images to enlarge!
This model of the Kierkegaard barque is an elegant, precise piece of work, a rare masterpiece. The ship model was built with sails tightly furled to the yards, to allow for a better view on the very detailed, impressive rigging. The ensign flown is the Swedish Union flag of that time (union with Norway).
The ship model is 1 : 67 scale. Length is 85 cm, width 22 cm, height 59 cm.
There is a display case for the model made of wood and (rather poor, high reflection) acrylic glass which may be used as protection when picking up the model with your car. The display case will not be shipped on air cargo. The case is 93 cm long, 29 cm wide, 63 cm high.
The model looks best when set without a display case.
The price of the model is 8500 Euro, plus transport cost.
Transport: The ship model can be secured in a transport box. This way,
delivery by
truck or air cargo over long distances can be safely done.
If you live
close by, picking up the model with your car may be a good way, too.
The ship model is available at my showroom in Recklinghausen. Here is
