The L'Hermione was one of a new generation of frigates that were built before the French revolution. The new concept brought a higher speed and more firepower that made her rival the English frigates of that time.
In spring 1780 L'Hermione brought Marquis de Lafayette to USA where he fought in the American Revolutionary War, commanding American troops in several battles, including the Siege of Yorktown that ended in a capitulation of the British. It was the transport of General Lafayette that had made L'Hermione a famous ship.
In 2014 a replica of L'Hermione was launched in Rochefort, France. The ship made a trip to USA in 2015 and has taken part in many tall ship events since.
The ship model was built with sails including the studding sails. It was built to plans of Jean-Claude Lemineur and Patrick Villiers, HERMIONE, Frigate of the American War of Independence, 1779 - 1793, ANCRE publishing, ISBN 978-2-903179-90-8.
