The barge type "Gedeckte Aak"

Since 16th century several types of flat bottom barges have been developed in the Netherlands and northern Germany for cargo transport on big rivers like the Rhine and on canals. The aaks had triangular or trapezoid bow plates and large rudders to allow for slow speed maneuvering. They were mostly clinker-built. The mast was used for sailing downriver or fixing the rope for being towed by horses upriver.

Open aaks could only work on canals or small rivers. For the Rhine river with its bigger swell a higher freeboard was required or a closed deck ("Gedeckte Aak").

By the end of 19th century the towing by horses was replaced by steam tug boats.
