The City of Adelaide was launched in Sunderland, England, in 1864. The ship was built in composite construction. The outer planking of the hull was timber on wrought-iron frames.
The City of Adelaide transported passengers and goods between England and Australia and had a major role in the immigration of Australia. In 1893 she became a floating hospital in Southampton and later became a Royal Navy training ship, until 1948. In 1989 she was damaged by flooding in Glasgow, sank two years later and was recovered in 1992. Shortage of money prevented restoration work to be completed. In 2010 the Scottish government decided to move her to Australia to be preserved as a museum ship. Loaded on a deck of a cargo ship, she arrived in Port Adelaide in 2014.
There is a comprehensive Wikipedia article about the City of Adelaide that has many photos of the ship, the restoration works and the final transport to Australia.
The model was built by a very experienced model maker. There are more pictures, several views of the entire ship model taken from all directions, and several closer views of hull, deck and rigging. Click images to enlarge!
This model of City of Adelaide is a beautiful pleasant piece of work, a
rare masterpiece. It was built with sails like the wind on port beam. Sails,
rigging, deck and hull are expertly presented.
The ship model is 1 : 67 scale. Length is
112 cm,
width 28 cm, height 76 cm.
There is a display case for the model made of birch wood and (rather poor, high reflection) acrylic glass which may be used as protection when picking up the model with your car. The display case will not be shipped on air cargo. The case is 119 cm long, 33 cm wide, 80 cm high.
The model looks best when set without a display case.
The price of the model is 9000 Euro, plus transport cost.
Transport: The ship model can be secured in a transport box. This way,
delivery by
truck or air cargo over long distances can be safely done.
If you live
close by, picking up the model with your car may be a good way, too.
