The history of the PAMIR

The PAMIR was built in 1905 by the Blohm & Voss shipyard in Hamburg for the German shipping company F. Laiesz. She was one one the famous Flying-P-Liners, known for their speed and reliability.
Until 1930 she was used in nitrate trade between Chile and Europe, until being sold to a Finnish shipping company that used her for grain trade with Australia. In 1941, after Finnland entered World War II, the New Zealand government seized her as prize of war. She sailed under New Zealand flag until 1948 given back to the Finnish shipping company.
In 1954 she was bought by a consortium of German shipping companies "Stiftung Pamir und Passat". The ship was used in South America trade, while acting as a training ship for merchant marine officers.

On 21 September 1957 she sank west of the Azores when caught by a hurrican. Only 6 of 86 crew were rescued.

In Wikipedia there is a comprehensive article about the PAMIR.

The PAMIR model, photos, description and dimensions

The ship model was built to plans of the Deutsches Schifffahrtsmuseum in Bremerhaven with great care of details.
Please take your time to have a good look at the set of photos. There are several views of the entire ship model taken from all directions, and several closer views of hull, deck and rigging. If you click on a photo you will get that photo in high resolution. Only these high resolution photographs show how much work and handicraft ability were put in the model.

Viewing the high resolution photos: If you use Microsoft Internet Explorer or Firefox, press F11 to minimize navigation bars and have a larger screen with the photos. The high resolution photos are about 12 megapixel. So they are about 10 - 20 times larger than your 0.5 - 1.3 megapixel computer screen. Most browsers by default downsize the pictures to screen size, so you cannot see all the details of the ship models. To see the original resolution move the mouse over the pictures and click on the magnifying lens.

This model of the PAMIR is a beautiful, detailed piece of work. The ship model is 1 : 100 scale. Length is 116 cm, width 29 cm, height 64 cm.
The ship is fixed to the stand by two screws from below. It can be taken out of the stand if needed.

The name plate is only slightly fixed to the stand by double-sided adhesive tape. It can be removed easily.
