The ships of the Hansetic League

In 1462 a French ship brought a cargo of salt from La Rochelle to Gdansk. The ship had to be repaired in Gdansk, and, after the ship's owner did not pay the costs the ship was confiscated by the city. The ship was probably one of the first large carvel-built vessels of the Hanseatic League, with approximately 50 m overall length, 42 m in the water line and 12 m wide. The carvel construction represented a significant technical advance over the traditional clinker construction in Hansa cogs, which did not provide enough stability for that large ships.

In 1470 the ship was refitted as a man of war and renamed "Peter von Danzig". Captain Paul Beneke successfully used the ship in hunting English merchantmen in the North Sea with a letter of marque from the Hanseatic League. The naval war with England lasted until 1474, when the Treaty of Utrecht confirmed the privileges of the Hanseatic League and the Steelyard in London.
In 1478 the "Peter von Danzig" was scrapped.
The Gdansk ship builders must have studied the French carvel-built ship very carefully. After 1475 their shipyards started to build large ships using that technology. A modern day replica of such a Hanse carvel ship is "
Lisa von Luebeck".

The model of the Hanseatic League ship, photos, description and dimensions

Please take your time to have a good look at the set of photos of this medieval ship model. There are several views of the entire model and closer views of hull, deck and rigging. If you click on a photo you will get that photo in high resolution. Then you can recognize details like the stitching of the sail cloth panels. Only these high resolution photographs show how much work and handicraft ability were put in the model. (If you use Microsoft Internet Explorer or Netscape Navigator, press F11 to minimize navigation bars and have a larger screen with the photos.)

This model of a carvel-built Hanseatic League ship shows the flag of Gdansk at the mizzen mast and the coat of arms of several Hanse cities at the bulwark. It is a beautiful and decorative workpiece.
The model was made according to plans of O. Kallweit, W. Hinderer, and H. Winter. It is 1 : 36 scale. Overall length is 119 cm, width 44 cm, height 96 cm. Keel, stem and stern post are made of oak. The hull is made planks on frame from pine. Mast and spars are beech wood. Fittings are made of copper and brass. Construction time of the model was 18 months.
The ship model is not fixed to the stand but can be taken out, e.g. for transport, or to place it directly on a flat surface like this model of the Royal Louis.
